Golden Globes 2014: Best Dressed

So it's January and we may be shivering in wholly jumpers as we wage war against the torrential rain, but it's not all bad: it's that time of year again, award season. The time where the golden glow of Californian sunshine is on stand by to warm us up, bringing rays of colour and glittering gems with it. On Sunday evening the Golden Globes played host to a number of best dressed nominees, (see my selection of the best below), with bright colour and embellishment running the show.

Now let's talk about Emma Watson. The girl's a style champion, we know that. And yet, her bold red Dior dress and cropped cigarette trouser combo was still a shock. Opening up a whole new option for award dressing, her innovative choice was undoubtedly the winner of the night. It was all classic, demure simplicity in the front and then contemporary, ultimate cool in the back - with the violet-blue heels and one-ear pearl earring tying it all together with a big bow of nonchalance. Raf Simons must have been proud.

Caitlin Fitzgerald wore a stunning bright blue, 50s style, Emilia Wickstead gown. A textured material, the low-high hem gave the dress a defined edge, whilst putting all eyes on the coral and blue pumps.
Other dress highlights included Michelle Dockery's Oscar De La Renta gem speckled strapless number which played rival to Zooey Dechanel's similarly Princess, fairy tale Oscar De La Renta. I feel like the t-shirt style top half in Zooey's dress was more relaxed opulance than regal elegance, with the studs adding a bit of unexpected punk into the mix.

Kate Beckinsale's Zuhair Murad was the supreme, dark mermaid example of sculptual hollywood glamour, while Lupita Nyong'o sported a clean lined, tangy red dress with a space-age style cape that draped off her shoulders.

All in all, there were some fashion risks taken on Sunday night that hopefully will lead the light for a contemporary new wave of award ceremony dressing that isn't afraid to push the boundaries.
